What Is A Diet?
In nutrition, the diet is a measure of the amount of food ingested by an organism or individual. The type of diet chosen and the amount eaten are indicators of the nutritional value of the foods. Different people have different needs when it comes to diet. The physiological diet is usually rich in proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients needed by the body. The psychosocial diet, on the other hand, refers to the way of life of an individual that aims to achieve satisfaction from their life.
The physiological diet consists of a number of foods, some of which are calorie limited. Some examples of these are lean meats, eggs, fish, milk, vegetables, legumes, fruits, seeds, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and entry 3 food groups, which are entry 3 fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. A good diet program will ensure all calories are met and the nutrients received are enough for the individual’s needs. However, just as some people need a balanced diet, others may need to eliminate certain calories from their diet. For this reason, the diet should be planned and monitored carefully.
Some common terms in dieting are calorie, carbohydrate, fat, diet group, quantity, and meal plan. When we say calorie, this implies the exact number of calories needed by an individual to sustain his standard life. A good diet program usually suggests limiting calories of both types: the total number of calories needed by the body and the amount of calories the body can consume within a certain time frame. Other terms commonly used in dieting are carbohydrate, which indicate the sugar content in food; and fat, which refers to saturated fat.
Diets can be classified according to the physiological type of diet recommended by health organizations. For example, a diabetic diet has been categorized as a specific type of diet, whereas anorexia nervosa is anorexia nervosa diet. The physiological type of diet can also include the consumption of supplements that can provide necessary vitamins and minerals to the body.
Diets can also be classified according to the degree of their fatness or their carbohydrate content. For instance, low fat diets are advised to patients who are severely obese or who have very low levels of physical activity. The objective of low fat diets is to reduce overall body fat, while low carbohydrate diets are aimed at increasing the nutrient intake through the addition of whole grain foods, protein, vegetables, fruits, and other foods considered beneficial for health.
